Gary U.S. Bonds feiert heute seinen 78. Geburtstag.

Gary Anderson wurde als Sohn eines Universitätsprofessors und einer Musiklehrerin am 6. Juni 1939 in Jacksonville, FL geboren. 1941 trennten sich die Eltern und der zweijährige Gary zog mit seiner Mutter nach Norfolk, VA, wo er zur Schule ging und seine Liebe zur Soul Musik entdeckte.

Mitte der 1950er Jahre trat er einer Band namens „The Turks“ bei und spielte viele Konzerte an der amerikanischen Ostküste. Wenige Jahre später wurde er vom Produzenten Frank Guida unter Vertrag genommen.

Gary Andersons erste Single „New Orleans“ wurde im Jahre 1960 auf Anhieb ein Erfolg und landete auf Platz 6 der Billboard Charts. Danach nannte sich der Künstler Gary U.S. Bonds und schaffte mit „Quarter to Three“ (1961), „School Is Out“ (1961) und „Twist, Twist Señora“ (1962) weitere Achtungserfolge.

In den späten 1960er wurde es ruhig um Gary U.S. Bonds.
Erst als er 1978 Bruce Springsteen und Little Steven van Zandt kennen lernte, kam seine Karriere wieder in Schwung. Der Künstler releaste 1981 den Bruce Springsteen Song „Dedication“ und produzierte mit Steven van Zandt ein gleichnamiges Studioalbum. Als Begleitband fungierte die E Street Band.

Seit den frühen 1980er Jahren war Gary U.S. Bonds immer wieder Gast bei diversen Bruce Springsteen Konzerten. Unvergessen sind die Auftritte anlässlich der beiden Shows im „Met Life Stadium“ in New York City am 21. und 22. September 2012 (wir berichteten hier und hier).

Darüber hinaus wirkte Bruce Springsteen auch am Gary U.S. Bonds Studioalbum „Back in 20“ (2004) mit. Neben Bruce Springsteen (Gitarre und Gesang bei „Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks“) waren auch Southside Johnny sowie Jeff Kazee (The Asbury Jukes) an diesem Projekt beteiligt.

2013 veröffentlichte Gary U.S. Bonds die Biografie „By U.S. Bonds – That’s My Story“. Das Vorwort stammt von Steven Van Zandt. Das 260 Seiten starke Buch kann auf Amazon.de bestellt werden.

Derzeit findet in Asbury Park, NJ das „Asbury Park Music & Film Festival“ statt. Das Festival wird mit zahlreichen Konzerten, Ausstellungen und Filmpremieren begleitet. Unter anderem feierte am gestrigen Abend (21. April 2017) die Musikdokumentation „Just Before the Dawn“ ihre Weltpremiere (wir berichteten hier).

Im Anschluss stand im „Paramount Theatre“ ein Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes Auftritt an. Der 68jährige Musiker brachte mit Little Steven und Bruce Springsteen zwei Gäste mit auf die Bühne. Im Laufe der Show kamen die Zuschauer auch in den Genuss, die ehemaligen E Street Band Mitglieder Ernest „Boom“ Carter, Vini „Mad Dog“ Lopez und David Sancious zu sehen. Während der knapp zweistündigen Show spielte die „Upstage Jam Band“ viele Klassiker und Coversongs aus den späten 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahren.

Darüber hinaus stimmte Bruce Springsteen auch den auf „Chapter and Verse“ im Jahre 2016 erstveröffentlichten Song „The Ballad of Jesse James“ an.

Bruce Springsteen schreibt in seiner Autobiografie „Born to Run“ folgendes:

„Dass ein Club wie das Upstage in Asbury Park existierte, war eine einzigartige Chance für die lokale Musikszene und unbezahlbar“.

Ende der 1960er Jahre durfte Bruce Springsteen mit seinen Musikfreunden Vini Lopez, Garry Tallent, Danny Federici und David Sancious in den Lagerräumen des „Upstage“ proben. Auch Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes machten im „Upstage“ ihre ersten Gehversuche im Musikbusiness. Im Jahre 1971 wurde der Club geschlossen und nie wieder eröffnet. Erst 2009 kaufte der Investor Richard Yorkowitz das Gebäude an der Cookman Avenue und eröffnete ein Restaurant mit angeschlossener Bar.

Bruce Springsteen – Live im Upstage 1971:

Nun hat der amerikanische Regisseur Tom Jones dem „Upstage“ ein filmisches Denkmal gesetzt. Am 21. April 2017 wird sein Dokumentarfilm „Just Before The Dawn“ auf dem „Asbury Park Music and Film Festival“ seine Premiere feiern.

An dieser Dokumentation mitgewirkt haben unter anderem Southside Johnny, die ehemaligen E Street Band Mitglieder David Sancious, Vini „Mad Dog“ Lopez und Ernest „Boom“ Carter sowie Jeff Kazee, Chris Plunkett, Sonny Kenn, Ricky DeSarno, Joe Petillo, Richie Blackwell, Paul Whistler, Billy Ryan, Gerry Carboy, Tommy Labella, Albee Tellone und Tommy LaBella.

Johnny Lyon erblickte am 4. Dezember 1948 in Neptune, NJ das Licht der Welt. Schon in jungen Jahren interessierte er sich für die Rock’n Roll Musik und beschloss, in Elvis Presleys Fussstapfen zu treten. Wie Bruce Springsteen verdiente er sich seine ersten Lorbeeren in der Küstenstadt Asbury Park, NJ. Unter anderem trat er in den 1970er Jahren als Mundharmonikaspieler in Springsteens Band „Dr. Zoom & the Sonic Boom“ im Erscheinung.

„My father worked at the post office and my mother worked for the phone company. I remember they’d come home from work, have a few beers and listen to records of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Big Joe Turner. I didn’t realize till I went to my friends‘ houses with their parents drinking martinis and listening to Mantovanithat my parents were weird. – Southside Johnny Interview, 2000

Nach unzähligen Auftritten in den angesagtesten Kneipen der Stadt, gelang ihm Mitte der 1970er Jahren der internationale Durchbruch. Southside Johnnys ersten drei Alben „I Don’t Want To Go Home“ (1976), „This Time It’s For Real“ (1977) und „Hearts of Stone“ (1978) sind längst legendär und ermöglichten es den Asbury Jukes, auch in Europa Konzerte zu spielen.

Am 31. März 2017 werden die ersten drei Southside Johnny Alben – die übrigens von Little Steven produziert wurden – in einer Collectors-Box wiederveröffentlicht. Sämtliche Songs wurden digital remastered und liegen nun in glasklarer Tonqualität vor. Ausserdem ist in der Box das Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes Konzert im Bottom Line aus dem Jahre 1976 zu finden.

What’s more, the 2-CD, 40-track collection offers new liner notes by Chris Morris that feature fresh quotes from Southside Johnny himself, and Bruce Springsteen’s original liner notes for I Don’t Want to Go Home. Speaking of Springsteen, his fingerprints are all over these projects, with such songs as “The Fever,” “Little Girl So Fine,” “Love on the Wrong Side of Town,” “When You Dance,” “Talk to Me,” “Trapped Again,” and “Hearts of Stone” all written or co-written by The Boss, while Van Zandt not only produced all four Epic albums but wrote much of the repertoire. But the real star here, of course, is Southside Johnny himself, one of the great white R&B singers of this or any other time, backed by a crack band including The Miami Horns and with such special guests as Ronnie Spector, The Coasters, The Drifters, and The Five Satins. Nach der finalen Show der „The Rising Tour 2002/2003“ am 4. Oktober 2003 im Shea Stadium (New York, NY), spielte Bruce Springsteen bis zum Jahresende etliche Benefizkonzerte. Unter anderem beteiligte er sich am 1. November 2003 am „Light of Day“ Konzertspektakel im Stone Pony (Asbury Park, NY), um Spenden für die „Light of Day Foundation“ zu sammeln. Wenige Tage später trat er im „Garden Manor“ in Aberdeen, NJ auf, um die „Muscular Dystrophy Association“ zu unterstützen.

Zu guter Letzt war Bruce Springsteen am 5., 7. und 8. Dezember 2003 bei den drei Weihnachts-Benefizkonzerten „Season’s Greetings from Asbury Park“ zu sehen. Der „Boss“ wurde dabei von „Max Weinberg’s 7“, dem „Victorious Gospel Chor“ sowie den Gästen Sam Moore, Garland Jeffreys, Jesse Malin, Southside Johnny, Nils Lofgren, Steven Van Zandt, Jon Bon Jovi, Danny DeVito und Willie Nile unterstützt.

Ein Teil der Erlöse aus dem Kartenverkauf wurde der Asbury Park High School gespendet.
