Heute vor 44 Jahren – am 9. Mai 1974 – trat Bruce Springsteen als Vorband der Rhythm & Blues Gitarristin Bonnie Raitt im „Harvard Square Theater“ auf. Gemeinsam mit Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, David Sancious und Vinni „Mad Dog“ Lopez bestritt der Boss am frühen sowie am späten Abend zwei sechzig Minuten Gigs in Cambridge, MA.

Zum ersten Mal überhaupt wurden die Musiker vom Theatersprecher als BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND angekündigt.

Bruce Springsteen performte etliche Songs aus den Alben „Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ“ und „The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle“. Ausserdem stimmte er den von Leon René im Jahre 1946 komponierten Song „I Sold My Heart to the Junkman“ sowie den Fats Domino Klassiker „Let the four Winds blow“ an. Der Titeltrack des anstehenden Erfolgsalbums „Born to Run“ (1975) wurde zum zweiten Mal Live vor Publikum vorgetragen.

Der 27jährige Musikkritiker Jon Landau besuchte die Abendshow und war begeistert. Am 22. Mai 1974 veröffentlichte er seine berühmte Konzertkritik im „The Real Paper“ und schrieb:

Growing Young With Rock and Roll
But tonight there is someone I can write of the way I used to write, without reservations of any kind. Last Thursday, at the Harvard Square theatre, I saw my rock’n’roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else: I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time. Die „John Paul Jones Arena“ in Charlottesville, VA wurde am 1. August 2006 feierlich eröffnet und wird seitdem für Konzerte, Ausstellungen, Messen und Versammlungen genutzt. Bruce Springsteen trat in dieser Indoor-Arena bisher dreimal auf.


Bruce Springsteen – Working On A Dream (Album, 2009)

Heute vor 9 Jahren gastierte die E Street Band im Rahmen der weltumspannenden „Working On A Dream Tour“ in dieser Location. Die Konzertreise begann am 1. April 2009 in San Jose, CA und endete nach 84 Shows am 22. November 2009 in der „HSBC Arena“ in Buffalo, NY.

Am 5. Mai 2009 begrüsste Bruce Springsteen die 12.099 Zuschauer in der vollbesetzten „John Paul Jones Arena“ mit „Badlands“. Ferner stimmte der „Boss“ auch die Tourpremieren „Roulette“, „Gypsy Biker“ sowie des The Kinks Klassiker „You Really Got Me“ an. Darüber hinaus begrüsste Bruce Springsteen Max Weinbergs Sohn Jay als Gast auf der Bühne.

„You Really Got Me“ stammt aus Ray Davies Feder und wurde von seiner Band „The Kinks“ im Jahre 1964 als Single veröffentlicht. Die Komposition erreichte Platz 1 in den britischen Charts und bedeutete den internationalen Durchbruch für die Band.


Ray Davies – See My Friends (Album, 2010)

2010 beteiligte sich Bruce Springsteen am Ray Davies Studioalbum „See My Friends“. Im Januar 2010 spielte Springsteen mit dem Kinks Frontmann den Song „Better Things“ ein. Das Werk wurde am 5. November 2010 released und erreichte Platz 111 der amerikanischen Billboard Charts.

Die „New Jersey Hall of Fame“ wurde 2005 als gemeinnützige Organisation ins Leben gerufen. 2008 nahm die „Hall of Fame“ ihre Arbeit auf und ernannte Bruce Springsteen, Buzz Aldrin, Clara Barton, Yogi Berra, Bill Bradley, Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein, Malcolm Forbes, Robert Wood Johnson II, Vince Lombardi, Toni Morrison, Norman Schwarzkopf, Meryl Streep, Harriet Tubman und Frank Sinatra zu Mitgliedern.

Bruce Springsteen nahm an der Veranstaltung teil und hielt folgende Rede:

When I first got the letter I was to be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, I was a little suspicious. A New Jersey Hall of Fame? I don’t know, does New York have a Hall of Fame? Does Connecticut have a Hall of Fame? I mean, maybe they don’t think they need one.

But then I thought, well, let me see: Albert Einstein, Bruce Springsteen…My mother’s really going to like that part. She’s here tonight. It’s her birthday, so there you go, Mom. It’s the only time those two names are going to be mentioned in the same sentence, so I’m going to enjoy it.When I was recording my first album, the record company spent a lot of money taking a lot of pictures of me in New York City. But something didn’t feel quite right. I was w

alking down the boardwalk one day, stopped at a souvenir stand and pulled out a postcard that said “Greetings from Asbury Park.” I remember thinking, “Yeah, that’s me.” Down south there was Patti Smith; right here in Newark was George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, great musicians.

With the exception of a few half-years in California, my family and I have raised our kids here. We have a big Italian-Irish family, and I found my own Jersey girl here – thank you, Patti! In the end, I just found something deeply resonant in holding the hands of my kids on the same streets where my mom held my hand, swimming in the same ocean and taking them to visit the same beaches I did as a child. It was also a place that really protected me. It’s been very nurturing. I could take my kids down to Freehold, throw them up on my shoulders and walk along the street with thousands of other people on Kruise Night with everybody just going, “Hey Bruce…” That was something that meant a lot to me, the ability to just go about my life. I was protected here, by the people here. And I really appreciated that.

You get a little older now, and you get those crisp fall days that come in September and the beginning of October. My friends and I, we slip into the cool water of that Atlantic Ocean. These days, you take note that there’s a few less of your friends swimming alongside of you as each year passes. But something about being in one place your whole life: they’re all still around you in the water. I look towards the shore and I see my two sons and my daughter pushing their way through the waves. And on the beach there’s a whole batch of new little kids running away from the crashing surf… like time itself.

That’s what New Jersey is for me. It’s a repository of time on earth. My memory, the music I’ve made, my friendships, my life…It’s all buried here in a box somewhere in the sand down on the Jersey Shore. I can’t imagine having it any other way.

Let me finish with a Garden State benediction. Rise up my fellow New Jerseyans, for we are all members of a confused but noble race. We, of the state that will never get any respect. We, who bear the coolness of the forever uncool. The chip on the shoulders of those with forever something to prove. And even with this wonderful Hall of Fame, we know that there’s another bad Jersey joke just around the corner.But fear not! Fear not! This is not our curse, it is our blessing. For this is what imbues us with our fighting spirit. That we may salute the world forever with the fabulous Jersey state bird, and that the fumes from our great northern industrial area to the ocean breezes of Cape May fill us with the raw hunger, the naked ambition and the desire not just to do our bes

t, but to stick it in your face. Theory of relativity anybody? How about some electric light with your day? Or maybe a spin to the moon and back? That’s right. And that is why our fellow Americans in the other 49 states know that when the announcer says, “And now, in this corner, from New Jersey…” they better keep their hands up and their heads down, because when that bell rings, we always come out swinging.

Erstmals trat die E Street Band im November 1975 in Schweden auf.
Am 21. November 1975 waren Bruce Springsteen, Roy Bittan, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Steven Van Zandt und Max Weinberg im Stockholmer „Konserthuset“ zu Gast, um die Werbetrommel für das „Born to Run“ Album zu rühren.


Bruce Springsteen – The River (Album, 1980)

Heute vor 37 Jahren – am 3. Mai 1981 – machte Bruce Springsteen zum zweiten Mal in Schweden Station und begeisterte knapp 15.000 Zuschauer im ausverkauften „Scandinavium“ in Göteborg. Der „Boss“ läutete das 88. Konzert der „The River Tour“ mit dem Creedence Clearwater Revival Klassiker „Run Through The Jungle“ ein und präsentierte im weiteren Verlauf der Show mit „Who’ll Stop The Rain“ auch noch einen zweiten Song aus John Fogerty Feder.
