Little Steven: Von „Men Without Women“ bis „Soulfire“
Ab dem 19. Mai 2017 ist das neue Little Steven Studioalbum „Soulfire“ erhältlich.
„Soulfire“ beinhaltet 10 Eigenkompositionen sowie zwei Coversongs von James Brown und Etta James. Das Album wurde in Little Stevens eigenem „Renegade Studio“ in New York City aufgenommen und abgemischt.
Mitgewirkt haben unter anderem Marc Ribler (Gitarre), Rich Mercurio (Schlagzeug), Jack Daley (Bass), Andy Burton (Klavier, Orgel), Danny Sadownick (Percussion), Clifford Carter (Klavier), Steven Salcedo (Saxophon), Steven Jankowski (Trompete), Kent Smith (Trompete), John Martin (Trompete), Dan Nissenbaum (Trompete), Michael Davis (Posaune), Ian Gray (Posaune), Jonathan Dinklage (Violine), Tawatha Agee, Elain Caswell, Cindy Mizelle, Lajuan Carter, Martha Redbone, Audrey Martells, The Persuasions (Background Vocals), die Asbury Jukes Bläser Eddie Manion und Stan Harrison sowie die preisgekrönten Toningenieure Bob Clearmountain sowie Bob Ludwig.

Der Künstler wird sein neues Werk auch in Deutschland vorstellen. Am 14. Juni 2017, am 16. Juni 2017 sowie am 2. Juli 2017 wird Little Steven drei Shows in Leipzig, Frankfurt und Regensburg spielen. Der Vorverkauf hat bereits begonnen. Tickets können über Eventim für 60,75 € bestellt werden.
LITTLE STEVEN AUF SOLOPFADEN:
Bisher releaste der beliebte E Street Band Gitarrist mit „Men Without Women“ (1982), „Voice of America“ (1984), „Freedom – No Compromise“ (1987), „Revolution“ (1989) und „Born Again Savage“ (1999) fünf Soloalben.
MEN WITHOUT WOMEN:
Im Laufe der „Born in the USA“ Aufnahmesessions hatte sich bei Steven van Zandt der Entschluss verfestigt, die E Street Band zu verlassen.
Bruce Springsteen schreibt im Kapitel 47 seiner Autobiografie „Born to Run“ folgendes:
„Meiner Ansicht nach führte eine Mischung aus persönlichen Enttäuschungen, internen Machtkämpfen und Unzufriedenheit mit einigen meiner Entscheidungen zu Steves Ausscheiden. Hinzu kam wohl meine zusehends intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Jon Landau …“ Quelle: Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run
Der damals 31jährige Künstler gründete mit den „Disciples of Soul“ eine eigene Band und spielte mit Jean Beauvoir (Bass), Monti Louis Ellison (Percussions), dem ehemaligen „The Rascals“ Drummer Dino Danelli, dem Bläsersatz der „La Bamba’s Mambomen“ sowie etlichen E Street Band Mitgliedern sein Debütalbum „Men Without Women“ ein.

Erstmals trat Little Steven mit seiner Band am 18. Juli 1982 in der Diskothek „The Peppermint Lounge“ in New York City auf, um sämtliche Songs Live zu präsentieren. Zudem wurde der Auftritt professionell mitgefilmt und anlässlich des „Cannes Film Festival 1993“ dem Publikum vorgeführt.
Little Steven – „Forever“:
„Men Without Women“ landete auf Platz 118 der „Billboard 200 Charts“. Darüber hinaus wurde die ausgekoppelte Single „Forever“ auf MTV gespielt und fand sich für neun Wochen in den „Billboard Hot 100 Single Charts“ wieder.
VOICE OF AMERICA:
Little Stevens zweites Soloalbum „Voice of America“ kam am 7. Mai 1984 in den Handel.
Der Longplayer wurde auf Platz 55 der „Billboard 200 Charts“ gelistet und entwickelte sich in Norwegen (Platz 6 der Album Charts) und in Schweden (Platz 5) zu einem Achtungserfolg. Bruce Springsteen bezeichnete „Voice of America“ als eine der herausragendsten Platten des Jahres.

Mit Kompositionen wie „Voice of America“ oder „Out of the Darkness“ kritisierte die Band den amerikanischen Präsidenten Ronald Reagan und regte ein gesellschaftliches und politisches Umdenken an. Ausserdem ging die Band wieder auf Tour und spielte unzählige Konzerte in Europa.

Bruce Springsteen & Little Steven – „Native American“:
Nachdem Little Steven im Jahre 1985 seine Anti-Apartheid EP „Sun City“ veröffentlicht hatte, scharte er etliche Studiomusiker um sich, um sein viertes und fünftes Album einzuspielen. „Freedom – No Compromise“ wurde im Sommer 1987 released und führte Little Steven abermals für etliche Auftritte nach Europa. Auf dem Album findet man auch das Duett „Native American“ mit Bruce Springsteen. 1999 wurde das durch Synthesizer und elektronische Overdubs geprägte Konzeptalbum „Revolution“ nachgereicht.

BORN AGAIN SAVAGE:
Zehn Jahre später überraschte Little Steven mit der Ankündigung, ein neues Studiowerk veröffentlichen zu wollen. „Born Again Savage“ wurde während der „Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Reunion Tour“ am 10. September 1999 released und brachte mit „Salvation“ einen Top 40 Hit in den Vereinigten Staaten hervor.

Little Steven schrieb im Beiheft folgendes:
„This is the record I would have made in 1969 had I been capable. It took 20 more years to write it and another 10 to get it out but chronological time is overrated anyway ain`t it? It is a tribute to the hard rock pioneers that kept me alive growing up. The Kinks, the Who, the Yardbirds and the three groups the Yardbirds spawned — Cream, the Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin. It is additionally a statement of profound gratitude to George Harrison, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Jefferson Airplane who first turned me on to Eastern melody and philosophy and forever expanded my cross-cultural consciousness. I must also thank Bob Dylan from whom all lyrics flow, and Allen Ginsberg for being a Buddhist among other things. This is the fifth and last of the political albums I outlined when I decided to make my own records. I wanted to learn about what was going on and write about it, talk about it, and hopefully learn something about myself in the process. After 5 albums and 7 years of traveling and studying and looking around I wrote the following liner notes intended for the original release of this record. We live in an insane asylum. A barbaric, merciless cesspool. And in this purgatory filled with disease and ugliness and violence and hatred and injustice and greed and lies and pain and frustration and confusion there are brief, fleeting moments of peace and love and truth and beauty. They are rare. They are years and miles apart. But they are so meaningful that they make life worth living. Those moments give you strength to face the insanity with your balance intact and your eyes focused and you endure and tolerate and survive. And if you`re lucky, real lucky, you can tap that strength and hold on to it long enough to, in your own small way, try to make it all a little bit better. Just a little bit more civil and just. To serve. And you don`t do it for anybody else because no one is going to thank you or reward you or even notice. Don`t kid yourself. You do it for you. For your own soul. Because in this world that`s all the salvation you`re ever gonna get“
